Papercraft treasure chest
Keep your treasures safe with this papercraft chest project.
Use different cardstocks and embellishments to create a bespoke treasure chest. Perfect for keeping mementos safe, gifting, fantasy games, wedding favours or even family treasure hunts!Best of all, if you plan to cut all the parts from one colour, this chest can be cut from one sheet of 12” x 12” cardstock!
The box measures approximately 100mm wide x 70mm tall x 60mm deep.
Materials needed
- Bookbinding glue or low tack-quick grab glue
- Short piece of thread or chain for the hook closure
- For scoring the fold lines, I recommend a fine tipped stylus and a metal ruler
- Assorted embellishments (optional)
- If you choose Option 1 below, you may wish to have some pens or pencils for colouring in the accessories.
Paper/card
Please note: I recommend using smooth colour-core cardstock between 180gsm / 65lb and 210gsm / 80lb. Using thicker card may make the project difficult or impossible to assemble effectively.
Option 1 – single colour chest with decorative paper panels:
- For the box – one sheet of 12” x 12” cardstock
- For the decorative panels – one sheet of 12” x 12” patterned paper.
Option 2 – multi-colour chest without decorative panels:
- For the box – two sheets of 12” x 12” cardstock.
Option 3 – multi-colour chest with decorative panels:
- For the box – two sheets of 12” x 12” cardstock
- For the decorative panels – one sheet of 12” x 12” patterned paper.
Tip: I recommend lightweight scrapbook paper for the decorative panels of this project.
