Fabric choices: When choosing your fabrics, pick two prints that look similar but have a reverse effect. Fabric collections often have positive and negative versions of a design – those work well for this kind of quilt as it lends that slight toned effect. Then choose a dark and a light solid or semi solid for the centre of the piece to go with your positive and negative pieces.
Stitch out tips and techniques
Hooping of quilts can be bulky – magnetic hoops and sash frames are great to make hooping and moving the project along easier.
Finished size: 35 x 35” (approximately 88cm) square

Irregular choice topper how to
Step 1
Sew the blocks together in strips. Then sew the strips together to form the centre. Press all seams.

Step 2
Lay the backing fabric with wrong side facing up, then centre the batting and then the pieced top, right side up, on top. Secure with basting or quilters safety pins.
Step 3
Start quilting: load the design into your machine, hoop the quilt with the centre square placed in the middle of the hoop - use the hooping grid, or your app (Stellaire) or camera (Luminaire).
Insert the hoop in the machine and call up your design. Use the editing tools to make sure the design is placed well inside the square and corners aligned neatly with the corners of the square. Sew the embroidery on the black squares in linen coloured thread, and on the linen coloured squares use black thread.
Step 4
When all blocks are quilted, trim the backing and batting to the edges of the top.
Step 5
Sew binding strips together and bind quilt all around.
Step 6
Top stitch all around on edge of binding to get it to lay nice and flat.
