Free motion quilting on the PQ1600S
We are in love with the PQ1600S machine! It’s the perfect combination of a household sewing machine and an industrial sewing machine. Exactly what we need to make free motion quilted mini bags, which we make in our atelier in Amsterdam out of deadstock fabric.
Materials needed
- Fabric of your choice – we used recycled denim fabric
- Batting or lofty stabiliser
- Thread
- Your imagination ;)
Equipment needed
- Brother PQ1600S sewing machine
- Free motion quilting foot
- Measuring tape
- Fabric scissors
- Pins

How to
Step 1
Today we will need the free motion quilting foot and the best thing is…. it comes with the Brother PQ1600S machine! So, no need to run to the shops. Attach the foot to your machine.

Step 2
Turn the button for the feed system to black and the presser foot pressure dial to the top.
Step 3
Time to get creative! Grab your fabric and pin your batting underneath. Think about a drawing or pattern that you would like to make with the quilting foot and go crazy! We made this pattern just by going with the flow. Remember, you have to move the fabric around – the faster you move it, the bigger the stitches will be.Tip: pick a contrasting thread colour. We used white on navy denim fabric, and we loved with the result!

Step 4
Use your quilted piece of fabric to make something – a bag, cushion, jacket or anything else you like. We made a mini bag.
