How to make the felt decorations
Materials needed
- Felt to embroider on
- Contrasting felt for backing
- Ribbon or cord
- Embroidery threads
- Appliqué paper
Equipment needed
- Embroidery machine
- ScanNCut or scissors
Step 1
Download all the embroidery files and stitch them out on stabilised felt.
Step 2
Once finished, iron appliqué paper to the back of the finished embroideries. Make sure to use a pressing cloth or sheet of baking paper when fusing the appliqué paper to the felt.
Step 3
Cutting out the shapes. There are two different ways to do this, we have included both below.
Option 1: cut out the embroidered shapes by hand. Then, place on the backing felt as a template, add 4mm all around and cut out.
Option 2: if you have a ScanNCut DX with a rotary blade, download the cutting files here.
Place your embroideries right side up on the cutting mat and make sure they are sticking well to the mat. Do a background scan, move the cutting shapes accordingly and cut. Then cut the background felt, using the larger cutting files.
Tip: when cutting on the ScanNCut, keep an eye on the cutting to make sure the embroidered pieces do not move. Reduce the cutting speed so you have more control.
Step 4
Now that you have your embroideries and backing felt cut out, remove the appliqué paper backing that was fused to the embroidered pieces.
Step 5
Sew the ends of the ribbon/cord together. Place in between the two layers of felt, insert 1.5cm of the cord/ribbon so it will be caught in the seam allowance and stay put. Lay the pieces of felt down with the embroidered part facing down. Add a pressing cloth and fuse the two parts together, making sure the ribbon/cord is caught inside.
Step 6
You can do a small reinforcement stitch at the top to make sure the cord or ribbon stays put.
And we are done! Hang these in your tree and admire 🙂
