two brown floral hair scrunchies on a blue plate

Sew yourself a hair scrunchie

Scrunchies - one of the most iconic fashion statements of the 80s and 90s are now more popular than ever before.

With this handy tutorial you can easily sew your own scrunchies. Get creative in both colour and textile choices and put your very own touch on your outfits.

As the amount of fabric used is so small, this is a perfect way to use up those scraps. Once you’ve finished making a garment, why not make a matching scrunchie with the offcuts?

You will need:

  • Fabric
  • 20 x 0.5cm elastic
  • Safety pin
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Sewing thread
  • Iron
  • Pins or clips
  • Hand needle and thread

How to:

Step 1

Cut a piece of fabric of 45 x 14cm.

Step 2

Fold 0.5cm of material over along each top edge. Pin or press into place. Sew (so you have hemmed both long edges).

Step 3

Fold the material in half lengthways, wrong side to wrong side. You should have a long, thin rectangle. Pin.

Step 4

Topstitch along the top (open) edge as close to the top as possible. Use a contrasting colour to add an eye catching detail.

Step 5

Iron flat.

Step 6

Cut a piece of elastic and pull it through the fabric using a safety pin. Tie the two ends of the elastic together.

Step 7

Fold down the open edges of the ends of the ring under, fold one over the other and use your hand needle and thread to sew together.
