Brother makes its 70 millionth sewing machine!

This September sees a huge milestone for Brother industries. We made our 70 millionth home sewing machine!

Brother started home sewing machine production after succeeding in mass producing the shuttle hook. Production started in 1932 at our Tenman-Cho Factory in Nagoya, Japan, with the ‘Type 15 Model 70’.

Since 1932 we have produced and sold sewing machines across the globe, with manufacturing hubs in Japan, China, Vietnam and Taiwan. We hit 50 million units produced in 2012 and 60 million in 2017.

Nobuhiro Konishi, managing director of Brother Sewing Machines Europe GmbH (BSME), said: “This is an important milestone for Brother and one we’re incredibly lucky to achieve. We’ve seen the business grow from one factory in Japan, to a multi-national supplying sewing, embroidery, quilting and craft machines to every corner of the world.

“As we grow, we keep true to our core values – that our machines are innovative, are well built, and always put the needs of our customers first. We apply these core values through every part of our business too.  Whether that’s working towards net zero, reducing plastic use, supporting community initiatives, or continuing to make long-lasting machines that take pride of place in our customers’ homes and businesses.

“Brother is built on the belief that we should always be ‘At your side’ so it’s humbling to see that we’ve been chosen to be at the side of home sewers 70 million times and counting. Here’s to supporting the next 70 million times people decide to sew!”
