Material suggested

  • Ready-made linen dress and cotton mixed knitted cardigan.
  • Knits with a firmer fabric, for example ones containing a high percentage of cotton, are easiest to embroider onto.

Stabiliser required

Dress: non-woven water-soluble.
Cardigan: medium weight cutaway for underneath the fabric and water-soluble on top.

Stitching out tips and techniques

For the dress:

Use a double layer of non-woven water-soluble stabiliser (fix in place with a basting spray if necessary).

A dress is hard to hoop. We unpicked the side seam, embroidered, then sewed it back together.

For the cardigan:

Add a layer of water-soluble stabiliser on top, as well as the cutaway used underneath the fabric. This prevents the stitches disappearing too much into the knit of the fabric, giving you much better embroidery results.
