Brother sponsors the pictorial quilt competition at Europe's largest open quilt festival for a second year running.
In August, 22,389 visitors from around the globe gathered in Birmingham, UK to celebrate a passion for needlecraft at Europe’s largest quilt show, the Festival of Quilts.
This year, Brother sponsored the pictorial quilt category for the second time running, offering a top prize of £1000 and also awarding £500 and £250 to the second and third place winners. Brother has sponsored the Festival of Quilts in various ways over the past 20 years.
The pictorial quilt entries were judged on various features including, design, execution, visual impact and originality. All pictorial quilt entries had to include a scene or subject as the central focus.
Across various categories, the quilting masterpieces were judged by a panel of up to six qualified judges, assigned by The Quilters’ Guild’s Judging Committee. The judges also assessed the quilts for visual impact and emotional response, originality and construction, plus accuracy of piecing.
The winning quilt, ‘She Matters’ by Sue de Vanny, presented a photorealistic gorilla against a yellow, textured background. Sue impressed the judges with her brave use of colour and contrast, as well as her incredible thread work.
Guy Baker, General Manager of the UK territory office of Brother Sewing Machines Europe, said: “Once again we have been blown away with the creativity and craftmanship that goes into each and every piece at the Festival of Quilts. The pictorial quilt entries reflect a deep commitment to originality and artistry that continues to inspire us year after year."
After supporting the festival for over two decades, Brother looks forward to continuing the tradition and seeing what the artists create next year.
